Hey floofs, Maggie here.
Let’s talk about something every hooman secretly judges us on. Our coat.
A good coat has a vibe. Shiny without being greasy. Soft without random fluffy patches. Basically “I have my life together” energy.
So when that shine goes missing, hooman, don’t panic and don’t reach for a fancy grooming spray first. Most of the time, the answer isn’t sitting on a bathroom shelf. It’s sitting in my bowl.
What Does a Healthy Coat Actually Need?
Skin and coat are working nonstop behind the scenes, rebuilding themselves every single day. That rebuild needs three things on repeat:
- High quality protein
- Healthy fats
- Essential vitamins and minerals
Miss any of these, and the coat is usually the first place it shows.
Think of fur as the body’s least urgent project. If nutrients run low, the body looks after the organs first. The coat gets whatever is left over.
Why Coats Go Dull: The Food Reasons
Not Enough Real Protein
Fur is mostly protein. So if my food is low on it, or the protein is hard to digest, my coat pays the price first. Dullness, shedding, a rough texture, the lot.
Highly digestible protein gives the body better access to amino acids, and that’s what actually builds healthy skin and coat. Not every protein source is equally easy to use.
Missing Omega-3s
Omega-3s are basically skincare for dogs. These healthy fats help keep skin hydrated and calm down the inflammation behind dry, flaky patches.
Diets low in omega-3-rich ingredients, like fish, often mean a coat that’s working twice as hard for half the shine.
Too Much Heavily Processed Food
Not all kibble bags are created equal either.
Some processed diets are built for shelf life, not freshness. They might tick the basic nutrition boxes, but they don’t always offer the moisture or nutrient availability that fresher, less processed meals do.
Food Sensitivities
Sometimes it’s not what’s missing. It’s what’s causing trouble.
Sensitivities can show up as itchy skin, constant licking, ear infections, and a duller coat. A floof who’s scratching all day isn’t exactly in glow up mode.
It’s Not Always About the Bowl
Food plays a big role, but coats can go dull for other reasons too:
- Seasonal shedding
- Fleas and other parasites
- Stress
- Underlying health conditions
- Hormonal imbalances
- Ageing
If the change is sudden or severe, skip the guesswork and bark at your vet instead.
So What Should Actually Be in the Bowl?
When it comes to coat health, simple wins. Look for food with:
- High quality protein
- Healthy fats
- Ingredients you can actually recognise
- Balanced nutrition
- Real moisture, not just dry crunch
Fresh food usually checks every one of these boxes. When ingredients are easier to digest, the body gets a real shot at using those nutrients for skin and coat, instead of just getting by.
